The 600 sedan debuted at the Frankfurt Auto Show in 1963. Representing state-of-the-art automotive engineering in just about every department, the newcomer featured an overhead camshaft, fuel-injected 6.3-litre V-8 engine, air suspension with variable ride control, a four-speed automatic transmission, four-wheel disc brakes, power-assisted steering, central locking, and separate heating and ventilation systems for the front and rear compartments. Mercedes-Benzs pioneering engineering approach with the 600 set a precedent for its luxury saloons, which continues to this day. Built in short-wheelbase saloon and nine-passenger long-wheelbase limousine body styles, which made the car beloved by heads of state for many years, the imposing 600 was endowed with respectable performance nonetheless, reaching 60 mph in a little under 10 seconds and exceeding 125 mph flat out.
