1929 Rolls-Royce Phantom I Newmarket: Never Re-bodied
A new era at Rolls-Royce started in May 1925 with the installation of an overhead-valve engine in a 40/50 chassis. The model was dubbed "New Phantom" and it benefited from a big inline six estimated to produce 90bhp. The ladder frame chassis was similar to that of the Silver Ghost and featured solid axles front and rear as well as leaf springs at all four corners. A variety of coach work was available on the "New Phantom" chassis. Those built in Springfield mostly were from Brewster, including the Ascot tourer, Riviera, and Marlboro town cars, the Speedster and Newmarket Convertible Sedan. The 1929 Springfield "New Phantom" represents the sheer elegance of the lovely then Newmarket convertible sedan.
This particular car was delivered new to B. L. Behr of Chicago on August 39, 1929, approximately two months before the stock market crash that triggered the Great Depression. Stately in every aspect, the Newmarket was a conservative design with a high and straight belt line highlighted by a polished spear of aluminum body contrasting against the rich black finish. Inside the interior is in butterscotch leather. It has a usable but older paint job that's now showing it's age. It's also mechanically sound with a nice clean engine bay. An excellent original car that's never been re-bodied.
